Before you puts lots of work into that, did you verify this really  
causes the issues?

You could, for example, change the function to do nothing, and time  
the slowdown; if that leaves to little (none?) gfx output, maybe you  
can change it to only draw a picture every 3rd / 5th / Nth time, and  
see whether the slowness goes away.
