[Scummvm-devel] GOG-Affiliate program, recent additions to website

Hi there,

my take on this: I was informed about the changes, and I explicitly
agree with us entering an affiliate program with GOG.com, and I also
support adding links to them to the website and the forums.

But I also agree that we should have at least announced it here before
going live. That was once again a case of not optimal communication. I
apologize for that, but I do think that Eugene and I acted in the best
interest of ScummVM. (And now you guys know how I feel when you
discuss things on IRC and I only find out about them by chance ;-). )

I also agree that the GOG link on the main page is not placed
optimally -- it should be centered, not right aligned. think the
simple reason for that is a lack of time and other resources on
Eugene's part. We'd certainly appreciate help with making this look
better.

At the end of the day, though, that's the only complaint I agree with,
though:

* LordHoto already explained why GOG is very different from ebay,
amazon and others. I agree. So far we have been *very* reserved when
it came to adding "banners", and I personally declined offers in the
past from companies who wanted to add ads to our site in exchange for
income (generic ads, not a specific affiliate program). I in general
dislike ads on websites. But I just don't think this is the same
category.

* I wouldn't mind if the GOG on our main website was farther up than
it is, for more people to see :-).

* As for the forum links: I think the "contact us" there is important,
and serves a good purpose. Probably still not prominent enough,
though. I keep getting forum PMs even though I explicitly ask in my
sig that I don't read them.
The GOG link: Hm, yeah, maybe it shouldn't be fat. And maybe there is
a better place to put it. Then again, it's a lot less visible than a
graphical banner in the same spot :). But maybe a graphical banner
would make it clearer that this leads to another site.

* Oh, I think we should add a graphical GOG link to the bottom of the
forum template (and once paypal donations via SF.net are re-enabled,
also that, just for good measure. Perhaps with this, we could remove
the link at the top of the page (though of course it's far less likely
that the banners are spotted at the bottom).

Cheers,
Max
