I see no reason why this couldn't be cached in a custom savegame-manager.
I think I'd prefer the default one not to do caching, by the way, to
make it possible to move around savegames without restarting the game.
(To load savegames attached to bug reports, for example.)

You don't specify for which files nodes are created, but could it be
trying to load metadata like a screenshot from the savegame?
