[Scummvm-devel] Windows console

Hi there,

yesterday, we had yet another feature request from a Windows user for not showing a DOS console window with ScummVM by default, see here <https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=418823&aid=3093800&group_id=37116>. (Before you ask for details, please read to the end.)

This was (as so often in the past) quickly closed and rejected by Travis. However, I decided to reopen the issue, and have a discussion on this on a larger scale. The subject has been brought up before, but I was never satisfied with the result of the (usually very limited, brief and one-sided) discussion.

We discussed this with some detail last night on IRC (see <http://echelog.matzon.dk/logs/browse/scummvm/1287871200>), and today there was some more talk about it: <http://echelog.matzon.dk/logs/browse/scummvm/1287957600>. Digitall then turned this into a Wiki page, which tries explain and summarize the current state, the alternative I proposed, various pros and cons, and rebuttals to those.

You can find it here:
  <http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Windows/Console>

This page hopefully explains the background of the issue. If you are interested in the Windows version of ScummVM, our most wide spread port, and its quality (there is controversy as to whether hiding the console by default will improve or worsen the user interface experience for the user), then please read through there, and join the discussion. You can add your remarks or rebuttals by inserting something like this into the Wiki code:

  : My rebuttal... --~~~

This is the usual way to structure discussions in a Wiki. The : will ensure indention, and --~~~~ expands to your Wiki username and the current time and date. You can use multiple : to nest your reply deeper (if replying to a reply).

Cheers,
Max
