[Scummvm-devel] FOSDEM 2012: Should we consider making an appearance?

Hey Team,
I know this is something that gets discussed every so often but I was
chatting to a friend who is involved with Wesnoth (Nils) and the subject of
FOSDEM (http://fosdem.org/2012/ - 4 and 5 February 2012, Brussels, Belgium,
attracts several thousand FOSS types) and open source gaming came up. As a
project Wesnoth use FOSDEM as a cool cover for team meet ups for some time
now.
There are 2 things I would like to raise for discussion.
1) The age old subject of a partial team meet up.
With FOSDEM still being several months away it struck me that several of the
team (ok, European devs mainly I guess) may be able to make the conference
and we could add our own mini meet up on the back of the main conference.
Either informally or as something with the ScummVM team stamp on it.
We always talk about wider groups of team members meeting up so consider
this a proposal ;). By raising the subject now it struck me that we might
actually be able to organise something if there is an appetite for it. Don't
ask me about costs or anything like that, I have given this that much
thought yet. It's just an idea at this stage. We can look into that if
people are interested.
2) If some of us did attend FOSDEM (with or without a ScummVM hat) would we
wish to contribute?
A key aspect of FOSDEM seems to be the development rooms. Brain storming,
hacking, ideas, presentations that sort of thing.
There is a call at the moment for interested parties to request slots for
development rooms (http://fosdem.org/2012/call_for_devrooms).
I know Wesnoth and others have been giving some thought to requesting a
devroom under the subject of "Open Source Game Development"
It was suggested that other projects may wish to pitch in and give the
development room some substance and variety (including us). I know Wesnoth
is more about actual game development, as we are about engines and
reimplementation but there is a lot of common ground and the subjects are
broad enough that it could lead to an interesting session.
Just an idea I am checking into this email ;).
Regards,
John Willis

> What is a grue?
The grue is a sinister, lurking presence in the dark places of the earth.
Its favourite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered
by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and
few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.
