Should still work AFAIK, and as an interim fix I'd propose
Recaptcha is bog-standard enough for site regos that it shouldn't
impede legit users. It's moot if the bots are exploiting a hole in
the rego workflow, but easy enough to apply I think it might be
worth a shot?<br>

This was in effect as an interim solution / experiment and I agree
that it has had no effect, which is interesting.
Therefore it appears that the bots have hacked the phpBB2 textual
confirmation modification as it is doubtful that they were modified
or programmed with the new passphrase, and this renders any current
question pointless as they are bypassing it.
I have thus reverted this back to a basic question as I can't remove
the modification anyway without shell level access.
