No it was 1.2.5 I remember wanting to upgrade for this alone.
1.2.5 is the latest SDL release and many Linux distributions/people with
older installs simply don't have it. I have not noticed any significant or
indeed any bugs with < 1.2.5 here.
I feel imposing the need for the very latest version of SDL when we don't
need to would be the wrong thing to do. Maybe add a note recommending
newer versions of SDL to the readme if you feel strongly about it?
Besides I'm pretty sure we depend on SDL 1.2.x anyway, so people should
have a version of SDL without too many mothballs.
