If anyone's interested, I tried changing my screen depth from 24 bpp to 16 bpp
and everything's fine again.
It sounds suspiciously like X told ScummVM that a particular visual was
available, but then did a horribly slow software emulation because the
underlying hardware didn't support it. Does this seem likely?
FWIW, this is with the xorg X server running on top of the nv proprietry
driver.
