The idea itself is not so bad, but I see no way how it will actually
help with debugging. I.e. how would you know which part of the engine
drew this or that rectangle.

Well, at least SDL backend works in 16bpp internally, so if you would
add line drawing _after_ 8->16 transformation and even after scalers
being applied, that would work. Otherwise no, there is no way to
guarantee that some particular indexed color will be visible.
