FWIW, I am mostly in favor with the spec document put forward by [vEX]. 
But, especially, I too consider very important that we retain 
transparent backwards compatibility with the URL system as it is right 
now, although the innards may be reorganized/recoded. If x% of the 
internet is linking to pages are they are now, it would be bad to have 
these links broken, not to mention our own self-consistency with our 
existing pages (wiki, forum etc). It would take either a serious 
technical problem or a serious design consideration to go ahead and 
break compatibility.
