[Scummvm-devel] ATTN: X11 and NULL backends to be removed June 15 & some notes to PORTERS

Hi everybody,

we plan to remove the completely outdated and broken X11 and NULL
backends after July 1, if nobody pops up till then to take over
maintainership. The NULL backend is pretty useless anyway; the only
point in having it around is as a template for new backends. But
that's pointless if it is completely outdated. Maybe somebody wants
to correct that, and even turn it into a partial guide on how to
create a new backend (by inserting some helpful comments, pointers to
the wiki, hints on how to create FS backend code etc.). If there is a
volunteer for this, just step up and commit/supply some fixes, and we
can stop the remove.

As for the X11 backends, there seems to be little interest in it, and
it has been uncompilable and incomplete for a rather long time.
Should somebody really wish to revive it, this would of course still
be possible even after the removal, as the source would still be
around in the repositories, ad patches for "new" backends are always
welcome ;-).

As a reminder: The unmaintained GP32 backend is already scheduled for
removal after May 15!

Cheers,
Max
