I agree 100%.

A 1.0 release will make a big difference in the user's perceived quality 
of the software, whereas it makes absolutely no difference to us developers.

Wanting a "perfect" 1.0 release means we'll never get there, or at best, 
/much/ later than we should, since different people seem to have 
different opinions of what is a must for 1.0.

FWIW I also like Sven's idea of having an RC release first, which should 
definitely helps us to get rid of most serious bugs for the official 1.0.
