This is an invitaion to bike-shedding if I've ever seen one.  :-)

I have to agree with others that the diagonal partitioning looks weird
though.  Frankly it looks like a rendering bug, like you wanted a
Gouraud shaded quad, but forgot to actually turn shading on...
