I don't like the mail alias approach at all. This way, only people with access to our mail alias admin interface can find out who a given mail will actually reach. I think it's important that all members of that list can easily check who is on the list.
Also, a mailman list with member-only posting is spamfree; while an open mail alias will generate extra spam for everybody on it.
