The one argument against wiping SVN that convinced me back then was that for anybody working on custom modifications inside an SVN checkout, this could be *very* annoying if they do an "svn update" without noticing.
While I hope that this is mostly irrelevant now, due to the time that lapsed, we may still want to consider an intermediate solution: Instead of wiping all files, we could just *replace* README, configure and Makefile with texts (resp. a script printing the text) that we moved to git, and pointing to a relevant wiki or github page.
That said, I personally would not be overly troubled if we just wiped the whole repository (still pacing a README note with explanation, as fuzzie suggested).
