Subject: Welcome to GSoC 2020 and ScummVM and ResidualVM!
To: <gsoc-students at scummvm.org>
NOTE: This email contains important information on starting to build your
relationship with the ScummVM and your mentoring team.
Dear students,
Congratulations on having your proposal accepted as a GSoC 2020 project for
ScummVM and its sister project ResidualVM! We are really looking forward to
working together with you on your projects and hope that these will all be
rewarding and successful projects.
We have prepared a page on our wiki to outline the steps you should
undertake next. Please read this carefully and follow the instructions
given here:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Summer_of_Code/Students_Guidelines Past
GSoC students have also written a page with various tips:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Tips_From_Past_GSoC'ers If you are
unsure about anything at all, please don't hesitate to contact us!
To summarise the big ticket items for you to look at in the near future are:
- *Get in touch with your project mentors* and start to sort out your
'presence' for the project.
- Start to actively discuss your task with your mentoring team and *refine
your proposals and project schedule*.
- If you have not done so already *fork the ScummVM repository on GitHub* and
create a ‘home’ for your work.
- *Subscribe to scummvm-devel* (at
https://lists.scummvm.org/listinfo/scummvm-devel).
- *Setup your blog for the project*. You are free to do this however you
want, self-host or use whatever works for you. If you’re stuck a major site
like Wordpress.com <http://wordpress.com/> may be helpful. *Please let us
know your Atom or RSS feed link* as soon as possible so that they can be
added to http://planet.scummvm.org <https://planet.scummvm.org/>
- *Post an introduction to your blog* that you've been accepted and details
about your task. Remember to keep your blog posts clean and use no
profanity or offensive tone as we will aggregate them under the project
planet.
- *E-mail your introductory letter to scummvm-devel* telling everyone about
yourself and your task. Ideally include a link to your blog and GitHub
repository so people can follow your efforts during the project.
- We strongly encourage you to *be present in the #scummvm channel on
Discord (*https://discord.gg/5D8yTtF) or *#resudualvm on ResudualVM Discord
server (*https://discord.gg/VFQjRfa) during the bonding period and while
working on your project. This is also a good place to ask questions related
to ScummVM or ResidualVM and get help.
Other than that, just stick around and get stuck into your projects and our
codebases in general, ask any questions you might have and take an active
stance in the community, read and learn. You are very welcome to get into
coding but you’re not actually required to do it before June the 1st.
However, please take into account your schedule, and if you have plans to
start working earlier because of your availability, you are more than
welcome.
Each project has a core mentoring team with the rest of the GSoC team
providing support.
Your mentoring team are the primary points of contact for your project and
it is recommended that you ensure that all your mentors are aware of all
correspondence and progress as you work on your project. So make sure to
always copy both your mentors when sending an email. Your mentoring team
are also the ones responsible for evaluations at various points during the
programme - but don't let this stop you from making the most of them by
asking for help and guidance. Their /primary/ concern is helping you
succeed in your project.
Projects and the mentoring teams are listed below:
Student: Nathanael Gentry (npjg on Discord)
Task: Macromedia Director
Mentors: Eugene Sandulenko (sev on Discord, sev at scummvm.org), Arnaud
Boutonné (Strangerke on Discord, strangerke at scummvm.org)
Student: Dylan Servilla (djsrv on Discord)
Task: Macromedia Director
Mentors: Eugene Sandulenko (sev on Discord, sev at scummvm.org), Arnaud
Boutonné (Strangerke on Discord, strangerke at scummvm.org)
Student: Aryan Rawlani (aryanrawlani28 on Discord)
Task: Unicode and BiDi support for GUI & Move Detection features to the
main executable
Mentors: John Willis (DJWillis on Discord, djwillis at scummvm.org), Eugene
Sandulenko (sev on Discord, sev at scummvm.org)
Student: Gunnar Birke (Fury on Discord)
Task: Wintermute 3D to ResidualVM
Mentors: Einar Johan Trøan Sømåen (somaen on Discord,
somaen at scummvm.org), Paweł
Kołodziejski (aquadran on Discord, aquadran at scummvm.org)
Additionally, other members of the team will help with mentoring duties as
needed and cover for each other to ensure you always have an active mentor
throughout the programme. You may also find you have additional formal
support from other team members as your project progresses.
Besides talking to your mentors, you can (and should) ask questions on
Discord and on our mailing list (
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scummvm-devel). Don't hesitate
to ask questions, there is no such thing as stupid ones.
Should you need to contact 'everyone' on the ScummVM GSoC team you can
write on #scummvm-gsoc channel on Discord. For any major communication
outside of the planning work with your mentoring team, this may, in fact,
be the best way to keep everyone informed.
Lastly, Arnaud Boutonné (strangerke at scummvm.org), Eugene Sandulenko (
sev at scummvm.org), and Thierry Crozat (criezy at scummvm.org) are taking GSoC
admin duties this year and can be contacted if you have any concerns or
questions about the program outside of the mentoring. They are also your
natural escalation point for any concerns or questions that can’t be
addressed by your mentors.
We wish you the very best of luck with your projects over the summer and
hope you enjoy working on ScummVM.
Regards,
Eugene Sandulenko and the entire ScummVM GSoC team
