Hello ScummVM team,
I wanted to briefly introduce myself: I am Axel Lazib, a second-year student in Computer Science at Simon Fraser University, reaching out as I have taken an interest in your Text-to-Speech (TTS) project for this year's Google Summer of Code. Growing up, I enjoyed playing video games, many of which were classics from before my time (I was born in 2004) like Legend of Zelda OOT, Doom, the early generations of Pokemon; which ignited my love for video games at a young age.
This Summer, I am eager to be a GSoC 2025 contributor and assist in preservation of these games alongside the team, while also developing my skills under mentorship. Your goal of preserving older games and making them accessible really resonates with me, and as someone who enjoys emulating and playing older preserved games, this means a lot. It's crucial for the video game community that older games are still accessible on new devices, so people still have the opportunity to enjoy these classics as technology evolves and as the original methods of aquiring and playing them get lost.
The TTS task caught my eye due to the fact I think it a perfect starting point for me, allowing me to progress and build skills by doing something that I am passionate about. Working on this project would allow me to get a better understanding of real software development and build a strong foundational understanding of a variety of games on a technical level, which is crucial before I take a deeper dive into game development and preservation; which is a career path I am interested in exploring.
I was taking a look at the application process as I would like to apply as soon as I possibly can, and I noticed the application wants some listed possible mentor. I figured it was better to ask directly, so I was wondering if I was accepted for this task, who are some of the potential mentors I could work with?
Thank you in advanced for any response and/or help in advanced, and I greatly appreciate the opportunity ScummVM has provided for students and coders alike since 2007. You can contact me at this email (ala282 at sfu.ca) or via discord (guiltyiwnl).
Sincerely,
Axel Lazib
