After visiting Mrs. Piermont to get her sponsorship, she will be talking on the phone. After you leave her apartment, she will still keep talking off-screen.

It seems that if you try to speak to someone, and you select an entry from the conversation menu right after she says something (I assume while the speech would still have been on-screen, if she had been in the same room), your speech is not played. Only the subtitles are shown.

I'm attaching a savegame right before visiting her apartment. (You'll have to sit through quite a bit of dialog before she starts talking on the phone.)
