Initial Comment:

Save attached. If you talk to (s)wierd guy (by showing him the letter) and leave hot sushi and save. when you load that save back in its like that conversation never happened ie man is still there but the letter is gone from your inventory. This is just an example it seems to happen with Max & Kos also,
