Initial Comment:
r48576 of the tools package introduced some changes that are now responsible for
1) "LINK" line being gone and replaced with (the old) "g++ ..." line
2) the wxwidges based GUI being built regardless if ./configure found that there is no package installed OR one explicitely told it with --disable-wxwidgets
