Comment:

 For future reference, the issue here was that the 1.x versions of KQ7 only
 support General MIDI, and the host system had a default GM device
 configured that was not actually capable of playing back MIDI. Switching
 to the built-in FluidSynth software MIDI, or installing another General
 MIDI device that actually works, is all that is needed to resolve the
 problem.
