I don't know how the original engine handles it, but i also don't see an
issue here.
The "spectacles" are an recurring object, which means that, even if you
mess up getting them the first time, there is an infinite amount of them
available for you to try to retrieve, hence the "spectacles" hotspot being
clickable all the time.
Even the object graphic for the "spectacles" on the bookcase is depicted
as a "box" and not the spectacles graphic they used when the object is out
of the box, further pointing toward an infinite amount of that object.
What the game does, in case of a successful retrieval of the "spectacles",
is to remove the hotspot from the "collonade" and as such making the
"spectacles" unreachable for Fulbert after that.
Sounds pretty legit to me.
