 The bug was already present at the end of October last year (commit
 7b7bea9fe5).

 I have also tried running with Thread Sanitizer, and while it reports a
 number of issues right at the start, there is no issue at the point where
 Address Sanitizer reports the use after free error (which is hopefully
 good news - personally I hate when I have to debug race conditions).
