 What version of the game do you have?

 Do you have the `FLICS` directory with all the AVI and TXT files in it? It
 will gracefully skip them if these files are missing, but there will be
 console warnings (if you have a console open).

 The other possibility is you have a save or auto-save at the start of the
 game - it will load the last saved game by default.
