 It seems to work well with no noticeable slowdown on macOS with a debug
 build for me. The cursor movement is smooth and quick on the start menu.

 Maybe this is an issue only on slow platforms. Have you tried compiling
 ScummVM with optimisations enabled (`configure --enable-optimizations`)?
