Comment (by Gemba):

The reporter uses the files with the forged filesizes on CD 1.

My two CD jewelcase version (files dated October 1998) is the unpatched
release: To my knowledge the gfupd101.exe was released December 1998. This
has also forged LAB files (ie. too large filesizes).

However, a similar message does appear on a properly formatted/rewritten
 LAB file (e.g. with
 [https://gist.github.com/Gemba/c793590c32a6c121445fa14ed361e51d
 lab_copier.py] or labcopy)

It was discussed already in the residual forums back then. If you read
 [https://forums.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15488&sid=4e909eecdf9e98f03ebf359a9ad4ef70&start=28
this answer] you will see my reported MD5
(`e13eb421b9490cbaeef66f0cf6156764`, see attached patchfile) also there.

 Identified / verified on Scummvm
 [https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/commit/77ac364933086c3bd1f3ca90395a68a767ddb4f9
77ac364]. Build on Raspberry Pi 4 (Raspbian, Buster 10).

Please find attached a patch for scummvm. If you prefer a PR on github pls
 notify me.
