 Actually, I was too hasty with the above.

 We do raise a fatal error when the endianness test is not passing. Closer
 inspection shows that the test above was ending with 'little' as the
 result.

 However, why there is no endianness defined is super weird. I would like
 to see your config.h, config.mk and config.log files after you run the
 configure script.
