 This is an engine bug.

 I just tried on windows and the same memory loss happens.

 There is no crash obviously, since
 a) I have 8 GB of RAM and
 b) even if the ram  gets filled completely the swap file takes over.
 Probably the reason why no one ever saw this.

 If more info is needed, please shout
