Comment:

 A year or two ago I spent a while trying to reproduce this. I am convinced
 this error was due to some other ScummVM bug 12 years ago that allowed the
 player to somehow leave the screen without the mule bolting, as was
 described above.

 As far as I can tell, both from examining the decompiled script and
 testing, that cannot happen. Two people were able to stumble upon this 12
 years ago and no one has since; that tells me that indeed this was due to
 a ScummVM condition that was later fixed.

 Closing this as not-a-script-bug because that was never proven. Probably
 should remove it from that script-bugs wiki page I only recently learned
 about =)
