 Well, it seems I had a problem with the datafiles.
 The game also uses some .dat files that should be in the game folder, but
 if the installer is manually extracted instead of run, these end up in a
 /tmp/ subdir.
 Moving the files to the game folder, the game runs normally.

 Closing as outdated
