 I followed your suggestions for testing for data corruption. The game ran
 fine on my Intel machine, so I thought it was a version-specific bug.
 However, on my Mac, it turned out I had corrupt data files. The AGA
 version of Inherit the Earth worked after I copied the data files all over
 again.
