 I have come up with a more accurate method of measurement so I have
 retested everything from scratch. Without further ado:

 branch-2-8: 128.08s
 master before commit 0d549d86f91c72fd22bb9328d2691937d9289097: 166.24s
 master before commit 42b4e7ca10de9d6efb843c58e47a41ff93f6c386: 148.41s
 latest master: 144.02s
 latest master with 2.8 engines: 133.4s

 So I'd say your changes had the impact you intended. Great job!
