 It could be a localization issue I suppose. Some path name or unexpected
 rogue localized character that causes the crash.

 Is the game's data files as installed by Steam by default or are they
 altered in some way (eg. a translation patch)?

 Could you attach your scummvm.ini configuration file? Also could you run
 ScummVM at debug level 6 and post the scummvm.log file after? Maybe it
 could contain some hints about what's going on.

 There is something odd with the game options on mine too, but it might be
 unrelated. The languages listed in the Game options tab for this game
 include an "English2" option, which is what is set if I run the game once
 (without explicitly selecting the language myself) and I also cannot seem
 to set the game's language from that ScummVM dropdown. It works if I do it
 from in-game, but not from the ScummVM launcher. Might be something worth
 investigating.
