 I've attached one of my savegames (dig.s22) right outside the lab.

 If I enter the lab and wait for Brink to steal the crystals and leave, I
 was not able to reproduce the crash.

 If I first went to the plateau to have the conversation described above,
 and ''then'' went back to the lab for Brink to steal the crystals, i was
 able to reproduce the crash.

 In both my tests I used the light bridges rather than the trams to move
 around.
