New description:

This was tested with recent (local) build from master HEAD for 3.1.0git,
 with msys2/mingw64 on Windows 10 x64.

 Steps to reproduce:
 1. Add the demo "Hodj'n'Podj - Maze O' Doom (Windows Demo)" as downloaded
(and extracted) from the ScummVM demos page to ScummVM and start it.
 2. From the main menu shown do the following actions:
 2a. Click on Rules
2b. Click on OK in the Rules popup window to close it
2c. Click on the "?" button
2d. Click on the OK button of the new popup window to close it.

The game at this point exits abruptly with a segmentation fault.

An additional oddity, which I don't know if it's intended original
behavior or not, is that the avatar in the background window is still
movable (clicking with the mouse cursor at some reachable spot will make
the avatar move) when the main menu is showing, ie. the main game
interface is not disabled when the main menu is showing.

Attached a log for when the segmentation fault happens for debug level 5.
