Comment (by spiffythedog):
Apologies for the late reply. Looking at the MIDI data more closely, it
looks like there are some slight differences in volume and note velocity
in the pub music track, which would account for the perceptible difference
between the DOS and Windows CD versions. Funnily enough, these differences
don't seem to exist in the original DOS floppy, American DOS CD (published
by Infocom) or Windows CD versions. They only seem to exist specifically
in the European DOS CD version. Perhaps the original EU DOS CD version
(with a SIMON.GME file dated June 15, 1994) accidentally shipped with
older, slightly less refined versions of the GMF music files, and the
issue was quietly corrected in subsequent versions? I've only looked
closely at the pub music track so far, but the intro theme of the EU CD
version definitely sounds much quieter than any of the other versions.
Either way, like you said, the problem had previously been fixed for
tracks that were actually affected by the issue in question (instruments
not resetting between tracks), and not by extremely slight differences in
composition in one specific version of the game. Still, could be something
for me to look into later, I suppose.
Feel free to close this ticket, as it's more of a version-specific oddity
than an actual problem.
