 Good news: I know the problem! Bad news: It's really bad =)

 Ticket #16269 has revealed that the "atomic write" feature in release
 2.9.0 has severely broken this game in Windows builds. These are problems
 in the common code so other games and engines may be affected.

 I'm working on it, but if you want to play this game in the meantime,
 release 2.8.0 works:
