 Hi there!

I found this feature request #10986 regarding external replacement assets,
which was closed as wontfix in 2021 due to copyright concerns. Before
opening anything new, I wanted to ask whether that still reflects the
project’s current position. I've submitted this as a comment to 10986 so
as to not create a duplicate artifact.

I noticed current ScummVM supports external replacement/mod assets in
Stark and modded audio in SCUMM, so I wasn’t sure whether the policy has
evolved or whether those are intentionally engine-specific exceptions.

My interest is primarily in local, user-generated high-resolution
replacements while keeping original game logic/resources untouched. I’ve
done a small SCI16 proof-of-concept, but that simple POC took roughly 200
lines of code added to ScummVM (Again, this was just for the SCI16 Proof-
of-concept only). I don’t want to pursue an upstream proposal if the
project still considers the general idea out of scope.

I ask because even with the features now included in ScummVM, games like
Quest for Glory III lose a lot of their fidelity and beauty on modern
displays. I believe that, as long as this remains a technical mechanism
for loading user-generated assets rather than distributing those assets
themselves, it could be a real benefit to the Sierra (but could be
 extended gaming community.

Thank you so much for your time, loved this project for years.
