Comment:

 I can't reproduce this with the Steam version of the game. The game starts
 normally.

 Please, provide the information requested above. Make sure that you've
 copied all of the game files, as described in the wiki page for that game:

 In particular, make sure that diff.avf exist inside the CDVideo folder.
 In the meantime, I'm closing this as worksforme.
