 The first commit where the intro sounds different seems to be:

 "SCI: fix PCJr sound driver volumes"

 There are many changes in that commit so it's not easy (for me) to tell
 what could have caused the regression.

 The PCJr sound driver also has had several subsequent changes after this
 commit and up until before the 2.9.0 release.

 Perhaps @athrxx could have a look.
