Comment (by eriktorbjorn):
I spent some time comparing my DVDs, or at least the parts of them covered
by ScummVM's installation instructions.
There are at least 3 different ones:
1.5 - OFFERED ONLY WITH SONY® DVD-ROM KITS.
1.6 - OFFERED ONLY WITH PHILIPS DVD-ROM KITS.
1.8 - OFFERED ONLY WITH GATEWAY COMPUTERS.
1.6 also contains a copy of Zork Nemesis, but I think it's just one of the
regular CD versions. I didn't check which one.
GOG sells the 1.6 version.
The data files are mostly identical, with the following differences:
1.5 does not include the addons directory, i.e. it doesn't have game patch
1.2.
1.6 has a different inquis.zix file, but that's probably only to adjust
for the disc having one directory for Zork: Grand Inquisitor and one for
Zork Nemesis.
The inquis.str files are different in all three versions, but it's just
the version number that differs. They are timestamped June 6, October 28,
and December 12, 1998, respectively.
1.5 has the following two files swapped:
* zassetsc/zassets2/global/g000m011.avi
* zassetsc/zassets2/global/g000m021.avi
They are videos of totems being sent through the time tunnels. 1.5 plays
the wrong video for the brogmoid and the dragon. (I've forgotten their
names, because I haven't played the game in years.)
The following files differ:
* zassetsc/zassets2/underg2/pc1ea121.avi
* zassetsc/zassets2/underg2/pc1ea131.avi
* zassetse/eng_anim/pc1ea021.avi
In this case, they look the same in all versions (they're videos of the
lantern, with the last version is the Dungeon Master introducing himself)
but 1.5 have them in higher resolution. Why later versions used lower
resolution, I have no idea.
And on a related note, the following file is also a bit strange:
* assetse/eng_anim/pe2em061.avi
It's the video of using the plastic rings on the fish. While identical in
all three DVD versions, the audio doesn't match the subtitles. The CD
version has the correct audio, but the video is in lower resolution.
