Comment (by antoniou79):

It may have been an intended decision, with the intent being to use the
keymapper and avoid hardcoding the keymappings to specific keys.

Reading the manual, it seems that the spacebar (and also Enter and other
keys) is part of a "you can just use keyboard keys and still fully play
the game, without ever touching the mouse" feature. For example, you are
supposed to be able to use arrow keys to move the cursor, use Caps lock
for view/mouse lock, or Shift to temporary unlock a view lock. None of
these are currently working in ScummVM.

This would need a bit more work (and testing) to be supported. We could
set more default keymappings to the existing ones according to the manual.

The current issues with that would be:
 - There are more (mapable) actions that are missing from the game's
 keymapper
 - Some of those may need extra work to be implemented. I'm mainly thinking
about the "momentarily unlock mouse cursor" one.
 - Not having the original game to test, (I have the Steam and GOG versions
that both use ScummVM), I am not sure which of the actions should still
work in the menu/popup dialogues and if so, how exactly they used to work
 there in the original game.

I am attaching a screenshot of the keymaps section of the game's manual.
