Comment (by GermanTribun):

I did add a screenshot from the German version to show how it looks there.
My guess is either the original game did have a coding error, or they only
noticed later how ugly it looks and fixed it for the localized versions
(which needed some new letter anyway). Makes me wonder if the game can be
patched to replace the "s" with the one from the localized version.

Btw., if you are open for more about this game. Many years ago I reported
an issue with the music in the nightmare sequences, but to me not yet
being savy with reporting, it got dismissed.

The issue is, that Sierra for three musics in the game did provide digital
versions that sound much better and the game does prefer if detected.
Gabriel Knight theme (5.wav for title screen and opening credits),
nightmare theme (99.wav for nightmare sequences) and end credits theme
(5400.wav for the end credits). The issue was that the game looks for
100.wav for the nightmare sequences, of course doesn't find it and reverts
to MIDI. While that can be fixed by renaming 99.wav to 100.wav, it's not
elegant. I strangely also saw some playthroughs, where the closing credits
music played over the opening credits (perhaps a bug in low-res mode?).
