It isn't that the official debian packages aren't satisfactory it's more 
that I prefer to use the latest cvs version available, especially when 
reporting bugs to make sure they aren't already fixed. As I said it's more 
a personal preference than a necessity and if it disappears then so be it.

Another reason I like being able to build a package is that if I really do 
want to play a game and it has problems then I can quickly install a 
previous package that works without too much effort and then once I want 
to help look out for bugs I can put the latest version back.

At the end of the day I'm only one person, if it'll make your job easier 
then do what you feel you really need to :)
