I read a number of places that OS X versions prior to 10.3.9 wouldn't
read Universal
Binaries; this turned out to be an incorrect assumption many people had
due to
GCC 4.0 being needed to create Intel builds, and not supported on
pre-10.3.9 versions.
In reality using GCC 4.0 for one half of the binary, and GCC 3.3 for the
other
is not a problem, and as such the current single download works on
all versions from 10.2.x and upwards (versions older than that
haven't been supported for a while, Universal Binary or not).
The only reason for a PPC-only build now would be
for the reduced download size, and that doesn't
seem worth the extra space in the list.
