IMHO, the sensible thing to do is what Neil's suggested.
It is a very localized (in a #ifdef NDS) change and can be documented in
the release notes, and the end-user probably prefers a few voiceovers to
be skipped than not playing the game.
Anyway a failing alloc often ends up in undefined behaviour land in most
engines, so it is sensible to be robust, even if it compromises the
fonctionnality.
On non-NDS platform, you can throw as many bad_alloc as you wish :)
