[Scummvm-devel] Game enhancements

Therefore, we all agree that ScummVM aims to provide an experience as close
as possible to the original games.
The only allowed changes/enhancements allowed by default are bug fixes. Fair
enough.

However, currently we do *not* offer that purist behavior to users. SCUMM
games do not offer the original save/load
dialogs, and that, in my opinion, is a *bug*, after the consensus on what we
should aim on. SCUMM games don't offer
the full experience that the original games did. The fact that the original
save/load screens have issues doesn't
change this fact, so we should aim to support them, instead of forcing our
own on the users.

Also, there should be an option to enable these screens by the GUI (not the
config file). I am not a purist, for example,
and I would like to have the option to use ScummVM's superior save/load
system in the games that this is possible.
I *don't* want to use the GMM, I want the dialogs to be replaced if I want
to, and this should be an option clearly visible
in the GUI (e.g. "Enhance original save/load screens") for people like me
who want them. Thus, these dialogs should not
be forced upon the users because developers don't want to support the
original ones: it should be an option. I, for example,
would like to have the ScummVM save/load screens in HE games. They should be
disabled by default since they cause
issues, but it would be very nice if they could be enabled, if a user wants
them (with an appropriate warning dialog, perhaps).

We also want engine and game specific options. For example, there should be
an option in the general options dialog for
undithering (like there is now), one for save/load dialog replacement, and
others. Should these go in a separate "Engine"
tab? Or together with the other ones? As for game-specific options... the
best solution would be to allow engines to
provide their own kind of options, e.g. checkboxes, as we discussed in the
past. For example, the options for Rex
Nebular should be visible to that game only. Any more generalized options
should be available from the Options screen.
I would also like to have the option of enabling simultaneous speech and
subtitles in Simon the Sorcerer 2, with a game
specific option, even with a warning. If it's possible, why can't we provide
it to users, if they want to enable it?

Regards
Filippos
