 Wow, this is a severe ScummVM regression that began in Windows release
 2.9.0. It breaks this game in multiple ways, and possibly other games and
 engines.

 I'm working on it, but in the meantime, you can download ScummVM 2.8.0 and
 use that for this game:

 Thanks *yet again* for reporting this, because it has also exposed the
 cause of bug #15700.
