Comment (by WildPenquin):

 I'd welcome this feature!

However, I've been playing around a bit with the original DOS version. It
seems the main problem with General Midi is that quite a lot of sound
effects are played via the music device in this game. But General Midi
does not have mappings for a lot of the sound effects (such as opening
doors, stepping around...). While the music can sound nice, with a nice
soundfont maybe even better, the wrong SFX is really immersion-breaking,
and to me the GM version is *worse* than the MT-32.

I'm not sure how other games which hybrid GM+Adlib are implemented in
ScummVM (AFAIK no game originally supported that), but this would be a
good candidate. Digitized SFX + OPL sound effect + GM Music would be
feasible (given the original game has all the data for them!).

However, SC-55 option (Roland Sound Canvas / GS) sounds excellent in this
game with a SC-55 emulator (or the real hardware, originally, I presume)!
I believe this is what the game composers used. It is much better in this
particular game than MT-32 (arguably there's always some room for
 opinions).

Choose some other SoundFont with GS-compatibility via FluidSynth can sound
even a bit better (albeit, not original anymore and certainly not what the
composers where working with when composing).
