Comment:

 I'm just teasing now :P I don't like that the buildbot archive contains a
 data dir that ScummVM misses, so I wanted to make some noise about that
 first. (When buildbot builds the dailies, could it set the "extrapath" to
 the accompanying data dir...? Maybe ScummVM should generally always look
 for a data/ beside itself if a path has not been configured...? Note that
 the accompanying README does not mention the data dir. I bet this has
 already been discussed a few times but at time of writing I can't do much
 searching except here in this bug tracker.)

 Initially I didn't realize that font load fail could actually be the issue
 (I would have assumed some fallback (os/environmnet) font, not invisible)
 so my initial "Oops no text" remark was genuine 😄 It is immediately
 apparent on launch that something is off about the data dir in any case
 because unlike the release build, the buildbot ScummVM starts with the
 older black'n'green theme instead of the newer yellow'n'red.
 (BTW, there was mentioned "the absolute scummvm/data directory under
 Global Options / Paths / Extra Path", but the default value there is
 "None" (not even "Default" like the Save and Icon paths).)

 So, rant over! I'll give it a try... ...no, that does not work:
 {{{
 /opt/scummvm/debian-x86-64-master-a494de21/scummvm$ ./scummvm -h | grep
 data
   --extrapath=PATH Extra path to additional game data
   --md5mac Shows MD5 hash for both the resource fork and
 data fork of the
 /opt/scummvm/debian-x86-64-master-a494de21/scummvm$ ls -F
 data/  doc/  scummvm*
 /opt/scummvm/debian-x86-64-master-a494de21/scummvm$ ./scummvm
 --extrapath=data
 # nope
 /opt/scummvm/debian-x86-64-master-a494de21/scummvm$ ./scummvm
 --extrapath=/data
 # nope
 /opt/scummvm/debian-x86-64-master-a494de21/scummvm$ ./scummvm
 --extrapath=$(pwd)/data
 # nope
 }}}
 Whether specified by command or browsed graphically in Global Options >
 Paths, it just appears in the Paths section with red text (screenshot) and
 does not take effect.

 But, for shiggles I copied the binary INTO the data directory (so that
 `scummvm` is neighbours with the various files like `gui-icons.dat`) and
 ah, the theme & fonts work!
 {{{
 /opt/scummvm/debian-x86-64-master-a494de21/scummvm/data$ ./scummvm
 # yay!
 }}}

 Then for more shiggles, I remove that binary and, with my working
 directory being /data, I launch the `scummvm` binary one level above:
 {{{
 /opt/scummvm/debian-x86-64-master-a494de21/scummvm/data$ ../scummvm
 # also yay!
 }}}
 ... that works too LOL. So I guess it is having big trouble with the
 "Extra path" setting, but is looking in working directory.

 Should a new bug be opened for this stuff maybe? I found #3984 and #5344
 but they seems to imply that what I am seeing is the opposite of what
 should happen...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 Well, in Lochness, I can see that indeed the caption issue is fixed,
 thanks!
